The sign is the only indication that this is a public house. It is owned by Samuel Smith, the independent family owned brewery of Tadcaster in Yorkshire. Many pubs in Victorian times were named after local trades and industries. Many people living in Hollinwood in that period were employed in Oldham's cotton mills. This no doubt gave rise to the name of this pub. It appears in the 1891 census under its present name but at 289 Manchester Road. Presumably there was a later street re-numbering or the pub expanded into the adjoining property. Image
