Earl Mill, Hathershaw
Built 1860 but rebuilt 1891 - architect PS Stott. 90720 spindles. Engine 1891 was a Buckley and Taylor 1250 hp horizontal twin tandem compound, christened "Oldham" and "Manchester". Fitted with slide valves all round which was rather archaic by 1891. The engine house is just visible. Allotments in foreground - another great British institution (men and their sheds). Am I boring anybody?

Park Cake Bakeries
Park Cakes, which is one of Oldhams biggest employers with 1200 staff, can trace its birth back to 1937 when three men launched McDowell Cakes on a part-time basis from a “two up, two down” cottage on Hathershaw Lane, Oldham. In 1948 the business changed its name to the Park Cake Bakeries and secured its first orders from Marks & Spencer. Since 1986-87 the company has focused its business almost entirely on Own Label production with M & S accounting for most of its £70 million turnover. Since 1994 Park Cakes has spent £5 million a year upgrading and modernising its bakery to meet M&S's exacting quality standards. The company makes a wide range of products for its main customer, from Swiss rolls and Victoria sandwich cream cakes, to chilled pies and croissants. It has a large group of bakers and chefs constantly developing new ideas and products for Marks & Spencer.
