Maple Mills, Hathershaw.
On the right we have a mill with a big engine house for a horizontal engine and this is No. 2 Mill, of 1915. The Mill on the left has an engine house (out of view) for an inverted vertical and this is the earlier No. 1 of 1904. The lodge was retained by a huge stone dam as the mills are built on a hill. The lodge is filled level but the dam is still there.

Maple No. 1 Mill, Hathershaw.
Sorry about the slope. The stone wall contains the lodge (now in-filled). Form follows function beautifully with a vertical sided square corner pillar between two concave stone buttress walls. This solves the problem of where to put water on a hill. Of course mills by watercourses did not necessarily need lodges

No. 2 is on the left and you can just make out the boarded up windows of the horizontal engine house. No. 1 is on the right and its vertical engine house is on its left hand end.
