Ashton Canal
The Ashton Canal just east of Portland Basin.
On the left past the moorings is Cavendish Mill, a Grade II* listed http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-212750-cavendish-mill- former cotton spinning mill built between 1884 and 1885 for the Cavendish Spinning Company. It ceased spinning cotton in 1934 and was then used for a variety of purposes before it was converted into housing in 1994.
There is no towpath beyond this point as the canal was closed until the turn of the 21st century when the Huddersfield Narrow Canal was restored and re-opened. The canal now passes through a tunnel under the Asda supermarket Image

Ashton Canal
Approaching the Asda tunnel. In the background is Cavendish Mill, now converted in apartments. The moored narrowboat appears to originally have come from the Melbourne Basin (which is on the Pocklington Canal) but its name appears to have been painted over.

Ashton Canal, Cavendish Mill
Looking east along the Ashton Canal towards Cavendish Street. Ashton Canal into Ashton under Lyne, 1984
Viewed from just beyond the junction with the Peak Forest Canal. This last half mile of the Ashton was a dead end in 1984, as the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, its continuation, was abandoned and unnavigable.
