In this rather grim photograph, across from Molesworth Street in Rochdale, is a piece of industrial wasteland cum car park. One of the more uglier parts of Rochdale, but sadly common in many of the post-industrial towns of Greater Manchester and North West England.

Baron's cotton waste warehouse, Summer Street, Rochdale, Lancashire
The term 'cotton waste' is highly misleading: this is not waste to be thrown away, but in fact is highly valuable material. J.B.Baron operated a whole complex of businesses based on cotton waste. Of the original buildings, only this fine Accrington Brick warehouse survives. Baron needed a large warehouse, for trading in cotton waste, as well as using it, was an important source of revenue.
