The grand Georgian post office was designed by the Post Office's own architect Charles P. Wilkinson and opened in 1927. The post office relocated to the old Woolworths in Yorkshire Street in the mid 1990s but moved back to its historic home in 2005. Most of the building is however used as offices.

Rochdale: Town Centre looking west
Rochdale's wide Town Centre was once the pride of the town. It was created in the early years of last century by covering over the polluted River Roch, and at first was used as a tram terminus, a large shelter being built in the middle. When the trams were finally replaced by buses, (ironically, the last route was the 17 to Manchester) in 1932, the shelter was removed, and the buses used stands along the sides of the Centre. This was a lively scene, but came to an end in 1976 when a new bus station was opened on Smith Street. Now the decision has been taken to remove the river covering, as the Roch is no longer polluted, (REAL fish have been sighted!) which could again provide an attractive environment.

Rochdale Town Centre
A strangely lifeless place once the buses had been banished. I never really got used to it. In earlier years, it had been a colourful place, with each municipality's buses in their own colours... the red of Manchester, the maroon and cream of Oldham, the light green of Bury, the dark blue and red of Ashton, and, of course, the glorious Royal Blue and cream of Rochdale Corporation. On Saturdays, the sombre dark green of Todmorden also appeared. Now - just a lot of boring, noisy, polluting, speeding, dangerous motor cars.

Banks on Yorkshire Street
The bottom of Yorkshire Street viewed from the reclaimed bridge over the River Roch Image #1 Yorkshire Street is Barclays Bank. It was previously Martins Bank and before that the Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank which merged with the Bank of Liverpool and Martins. http://www.martinsbank.co.uk/11-19-70%20Rochdale.htm It was built in 1875 and originally it has three storeys and tower above the corner. It seems to have been removed sometime between 1940 and 1964, possibly due to war damage. Just higher up the street is the Yorkshire Bank.
