Smithy Bridge signalbox
When photographed, the signalbox was still a block post and in control of the level crossing. The signalbox was downgraded to a gate box later in 2011 with signalling duties passed to the new Rochdale West signalbox (located at Castleton). Gate control was also transferred to Rochdale West on January 27th 2014, rendering Smithy Bridge signalbox redundant.

Train leaving Smithy Bridge (2010)
The train has left Smithy Bridge Station bound for Littleborough and beyond; the signal has been reset to danger; the barriers on the level crossing are being raised; and pedestrians are making their way across the tracks.

The train has left Smithy Bridge Station bound for Littleborough and beyond; the signal has been reset to danger; the barriers on the level crossing are being raised; and pedestrians are making their way across the tracks.

In addition to the change in the trackside signal and the station signage the level crossing has been automated so the signal box has gone, the barriers renewed and obstruction detecting radar equipment had been installed.
