Rochdale 1st railway station (site), Greater Manchester
Opened in 1839 by the Manchester & Leeds Railway, soon to become part of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway, this station closed in 1889 when it was replaced by the current station, some 250m south west. View north east towards Smithy Bridge and Leeds. The shed on the left marks the site of the original goods shed. In front of it was the single storey booking office, which was demolished in the 1950s. The site now lies within an industrial estate.

Entrance to 'The Railway Works', Fishwick Street, Rochdale
This is all that remains of the once-impressive entrance to the large engineering works of Thomas Robinson, called the 'Railway Works'. In spite of its name, most of the business of the works consisted of the manufacture of machinery for the textile trade.

Rochdale: Oldham Road
Looking north. Before the railway was opened, the road here ran through without a dip, but was lowered to give clearance underneath the railway. This left the shops and houses on this stretch of road on a high-level 'landing'.

Leeds train leaving Rochdale station
The 11.21 Manchester Victoria to Leeds (via Bradford) service bounces out of Rochdale. The track in the foreground is the erstwhile bay platform for Oldham loop services, redundant since the route was closed in October 2009.

Houses on Oldham Road, Rochdale.
Only the bright afternoon sunshine made these otherwise nondescript houses stand out. The fact they stand so far above the level of the road suggests they may predate the Lancashire & Yorkshire railway, as the road was lowered to go under the railway just out of shot to the right Image That would date them from the early 19th century at the latest.
