Lords Exchange Yard
Back in the days when this was a Strowger Telephone Exchange, staff were based here to provide service to the local customers. Here in a snowstorm we see some of the vans in the yard behind the exchange. Getting their drivers out of the canteen must have been a nightmare that day:-) For the record, the nearest is a Vauxhall Viva and the others are 15cwt Commers. Post Office Telecommunications were just about the last major orderers of these types. The buildings beyond the wall are on Hall road and the trees and houses visible through the gap between the buildings are on Hamilton Terrace.

Racks of Strowger 2-motion selectors. These were in use in Lords Telephone Exchange until the early 1990's when they were finally phased out, replaced by modern equipment. These were in the Tandem unit - see Image for more information about Lords Telephone Exchange.

Lords Telephone Exchange
Nowhere near the cricket ground, the building was originally known as Cunningham telephone exchange. The exchange was built in 1937 and at one time housed two local telephone exchange strowger units, a tandem exchange (used for routing of calls only), a manual exchange and a directory enquiries bureau. For an example of Strowger equipment in the Tandem unit have a look at Image A new building was added at the back to house new TXE4 local units, the first of the type to enter service in London. The curved building behind the main building is the staircase / fire escape for both and was often referred to as the conning tower. The original building suffered a fire in the 1990's. All the old equipment was removed and much of the building was subsequently sold off to become offices and apartments - the latter being called Manywell Heights (apartment info from David Hillas). A small amount of modern equipment to provide local services is retained within the building.

Junction of Hall Road and Hamilton Terrace
A 187 bus serving Hall Road pulls away from the lights. Its appearance of being down at the rear is due to the large square ramp at this junction and others along Hamilton Terrace. Accidents here were common because of drivers speeding along the terrace and the ramps were introduced to calm the traffic.
