North London Line
Silverlink 313101 heads west between Finchley Road and Frognal and West Hampstead stations, en-route to Richmond. The local trains used to get their supply from the third rail, but this has been replaced by overhead wires. The alleyway follows the line of the railway from Finchley Road to West End Lane. Unfortunately, it is not a very pleasant place, being used by dogs and down-and-outs as a toilet. The black paint recently applied to the wall is another attempt to combat the graffiti that the area suffers from.

Finchley Road (Midland) with Down stopping train
View eastward from the path beside the North London Line between Finchley Road & Frognal and West End Lane stations, where the NLR crosses the Midland Main Line out of St Pancras. All lines are emerging from tunnels (Hampstead Tunnel on the NLR off to the left, Belsize Tunnel on the Midland ahead; also off to the right the tunnels of the LT Metropolitan lines from Baker Street at Finchley Road (LT) and beyond it the ex-GC line from Marylebone. Immediately underneath me on the Down Fast line, Stanier 'Jubilee' 6P 4-6-0 No. 45648 'Wemyss' is coming out on a stopping train from St Pancras, passing the remains of Finchley Road Midland station (closed 11/7/27) and heading for Bedford. On the left an empty stock train heading for St Pancras is about to join the Up Fast line into the tunnel. On the right are the Goods lines, using their own tunnel. Then on the right are the goods yards of the Midland and Metropolitan (also a Cadbury's warehouse), then out of frame are the four LT tracks and finally the two LNER (ex-GC) tracks. It was a wonderful spot for the Train-Watcher.

Mainline From St.Pancras
A view of the Midland mainline from St.Pancras to Leicester taken from a passing 328 bus on West End Lane. These are the tracks east of West Hampstead (Midland) Station. The slab sided bridge in the middle distance carries the North London Line across the tracks. In the distance stands the square block of the O2 Centre and the shops and houses on the Finchley Road.

Nominally the southbound direction for Thameslink trains, otherwise towards St Pancras on the main line. The bridge carries the North London Line.

West Hampstead
City Thameslink liveried 319432, en-route to Bedford, leans into the corner on the fast line as it approaches West Hampstead station from St.Pancras. It won't be stopping. On the right is Homebase and in the background, the Sainsbury's store at the O2 Centre. In the background the railway passes through twin tunnels under Hampstead.
