View NE, towards Gospel Oak, Camden Road, Highbury etc. The NLR was a major route for freight traffic between the Depots and Yards of North and East London and those to the West and South. Freight trains, hauled mainly by LMS but also by LNE and SR locomotives, were fitted somehow between the Broad Street electrics on just a double track west of Camden Road. This particular train is headed by LNE ex-Great Northern J6 0-6-0 No. 4239 and will have come from Ferme Park Yards via Gospel Oak.

City Thameslink liveried 319432, en-route to Bedford, leans into the corner on the fast line as it approaches West Hampstead station from St.Pancras. It won't be stopping. On the right is Homebase and in the background, the Sainsbury's store at the O2 Centre. In the background the railway passes through twin tunnels under Hampstead.

Silverlink 313101 heads west between Finchley Road and Frognal and West Hampstead stations, en-route to Richmond. The local trains used to get their supply from the third rail, but this has been replaced by overhead wires. The alleyway follows the line of the railway from Finchley Road to West End Lane. Unfortunately, it is not a very pleasant place, being used by dogs and down-and-outs as a toilet. The black paint recently applied to the wall is another attempt to combat the graffiti that the area suffers from.

The line is one of north London's principal freight arteries. Here, a westbound oil train heads towards West Hampstead station behind 47279. The modern housing behind is on Dresden Close. The houses on the right are on Finchley Road, opposite Finchley Road and Frognal station. The view was taken from a temporary footbridge during renewal of the North London Line's bridge over the Midland main line in 1980. The original footpath from Finchley Road is between the rickety fence and the brickwall in the foreground.
