268 on Finchley Road
Leyland National LS109 makes its way past The North Star public house and College Court. The Leyland Nationals were new to the route in 1978, taking over from the AEC Swifts. The bus driver has forgotten to change his destination blinds - the bus is on route to Golders Green via Hampstead. The Sainsbury's opposite subsequently became a Woolworths store - see Image by Christine Matthews. Behind is the apartment block housing the Waitrose supermarket, it was also home to Habitat.

Smoker friendly
Just a few days after the indoor smoking ban comes into force this pub employs the image of Sherlock Holmes to announce its 'smoker friendly' outside seating area. One would imagine that a modern Dr Watson might not approve.

The North Star
This imposing pub, with its embossed gold stars, was purpose built in 1850 and was one of the earlier buildings on Finchley Road which was opened in 1835 to replace the steep haul up Hampstead Hill on the way north out of London. The pub originally had a roofline balustrade and an arch which were removed when they became unsafe - it looks a little incomplete without them. It still boasts a cast-iron balcony although one cannot imagine wanting to spend much time above the noise and fumes of the Finchley Road traffic.
