1 South End Road
c.Early 20th Century building on the corner of Pond Street and South End Road. For many years until the mid 1950s it housed a second hand bookshop known as Booklovers' Corner, famed for being where George Orwell worked during 1934-5, also living above the shop (see Image for a close up of the commemorative plaque on the pillar in the centre of the photo). Later uses of the ground floor included a chess café, a pizza joint and a bakery, firstly as a branch of Le Pain Quotidien and since 2020 of Gail's.

Julian Huxley's house
In Pond Street, Hampstead, over the road from the Royal Free Hospital. A ceramic plaque records that the celebrated zoologist lived here from 1943 until his death in 1975, and depicts a pair of grebes, his close study of which birds first made his name.
