Unusually named pub on Albany Street; two floors, corner bar, outside seating, wood panelling. Cask ales on offer at my visit: Greene King IPA, Southwold Bitter, Landlord.

Strangely named pub and restaurant on the corner of Albany and Longford Streets. From the pub's web site http://www.theartichoke.net/ Dating from the 16th Century, the Queen’s Head & Artichoke was once a Royal Hunting Lodge on the site of what is now The Regent’s Park. It is mentioned in the Crew’s Survey in 1753 as ‘a ramshackle old tavern’. When The Regent’s Park was created, several well known Inns were demolished, one of which was the Queen’s Head & Artichoke. It was re-established at its present site in 1811, although the current building dates from around 1900. The licence itself dates from the time Queen Elizabeth 1st reign, after whom the pub is named. The origin of its name is attributed to Daniel Clark, Master Cook & Head Gardener to both Elizabeth 1st & James 1st.

Back in the 16th Century the Queen's Head and Artichoke was once a royal hunting lodge. On the building of Regents Park, it was moved to its present site in Albany Street, a new building being built in 1811. The present building, with its interesting turret, dates from around 1900. The licence itself dates from Queen Elizabeth I. Although the name of the pub sounds like a modern theme pub creation, its name dates back to its origins, being attributed to Daniel Clarke, master cook to Elizabeth I and James I, with the tavern itself being run by Queen Elizabeth's head gardener.

The Royal College of Physicians and associated medical organisations are in several buildings in this area, some of the Nash terraces of Regents Park like this, also in the modern building shown in Image Description of that photo gives background and links.
