Former petrol station, Hampstead Road
Much is made of the number of pubs that close down, but a similar cull seems to be taking place almost unnoticed when it comes to petrol stations. Anyone needing to fill up a vehicle in central London faces an uphill struggle: particularly difficult when one needs to return a hire car or van with the tank full. This awkward little triangular site hosted a very useful BP station until a couple of years ago; I suspect it may be a casualty of the HS2 railway works shortly to affect this area.

The old Euston Station, 1960
The exit from the station, with a Black 5 locomotive propelling empty stock under the Ampthill Square Bridge, which has since been demolished. In the foreground are the electrified tracks for the older generation of local electric trains to Watford which used the 4-rail system, shared with Bakerloo Line underground trains north of Queens Park.

A cabin in a Mk.3 sleeping car
This cabin is in the 'First Class' configuration, the only difference from 2nd class being that the top bunk is stowed. Despite approaching the end of its working life, the car has recently been fitted with a USB charging port in place of the old shaver socket - a very useful facility. But generally I have to say that these coaches are showing their age and are somewhat 'tired'. They are to be replaced on the Caledonian routes in 2018, having been in use since the 1970s/80s. Overhauled Mk.3 sleepers will continue to be used on the route from Paddington to Penzance.
