This short street runs down from Castle Meadow to London Street. It is named after Amelia Opie, a 19th century writer and poet, who for many years lived in a house at the top of the street.

Opie Street past the Castle Chambers
Opie Street is named after the Romantic poet, novelist and playwright Amelia Opie whose house, or rather her parents', where she lived after the death of her husband, stands at the eastern end of it, although it has a Castle Meadow address. Not mentioned in any guidebook is the pre-Victorian era name of this street which was Gropekunte Lane, named after the prostitutes who plied their trade here once upon a time. Plaque on the corner of Opie Street
The plaque commemorates the location where a sedan chair for hire once used to stand. It was created in the 1930s by HA Miller. The bronze plate > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6448670 depicts two men in late 18th century dress holding the shafts of a sedan chair.
