St Mary's church - west end of chancel
The renovated chancel stands separate from the rest of the now ruined nave and tower.
St Mary's is located on the grounds of Barningham Hall but there is free access for visitors to the church. The church fell into disuse after the Reformation; the chancel was restored and is still in regular use, whereas tower and nave did survive only as ruins > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/831160. The original 13th century Purbeck marble font > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/831174 now stands in the tower. The perhaps most noteworthy feature of this church is the collection of medieval and continental glass > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/831193 - http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/831196 with a rare royal arms created from stained glass inserted in the east window > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/831186. There is a large C15 brass on the south wall > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/831202. The unusual reredos is also the war memorial http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/831181 - it depicts WWII soldiers in uniform. The church is open every day. Barningham Winter St Mary's church
This church was almost lost when the part of the tower collapsed and smashed through the nave roof in the 17th c. Only the 14th c. chancel remained. The tower still remarkably still contains a working bell, and within its base is the font. During the 19th c. a small porch-like extension was erected west of the chancel and a gallery installed above. There are some good memorials here to various members of the Paston and Mott families. A brass which hangs on the wall of the entrance is to a knight by the name of Wynter, from whom the parish inherited its name. The reredos is a War Memorial. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/831181 A black tablet tells of L.Col Charles Radcliffe who went missing in 1915 and despite his widow’s efforts his body was never found. The Royal Arms of Charles I are in glass and form part of the east window.
