The John Wallace Linton, Newport
Wetherspoons pub located at the railway station end of Cambrian Road. John Wallace Linton was a native of Malpas, Newport who was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross in 1943. Commander Linton's submarine, HMS Turbulent, was presumed sunk by enemy action in the Mediterranean in March 1943 having wreaked havoc with enemy shipping for many months previously. All 69 members of the crew were lost. Commander Linton's VC was awarded for sustained bravery and persistence rather than for an individual act of heroism. There is a memorial http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2363384 to Commander Linton nearby, on Kutaisi Walk on the west bank of the River Usk.

Demolition of Cambrian car park and shopping centre, Newport
This early February 2013 view across Railway Street shows demolition work in progress. The 500-space Cambrian multi-storey car park which closed at the end of 2012, is being demolished, along with the adjacent shopping area. A 7-storey office block is planned for the site.

Queensway office block in Newport city centre
Viewed from Newport railway station in early April 2014. Located on the site of the demolished Cambrian Retail Centre, the new Queensway office block is being fitted out internally in preparation for scheduled opening in autumn 2014. A major occupier of the building will be Admiral Insurance.
