Wetherspoons pub located at the railway station end of Cambrian Road. John Wallace Linton was a native of Malpas, Newport who was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross in 1943. Commander Linton's submarine, HMS Turbulent, was presumed sunk by enemy action in the Mediterranean in March 1943 having wreaked havoc with enemy shipping for many months previously. All 69 members of the crew were lost. Commander Linton's VC was awarded for sustained bravery and persistence rather than for an individual act of heroism. There is a memorial http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2363384 to Commander Linton nearby, on Kutaisi Walk on the west bank of the River Usk.
