War grave at St. Helen's church, Llanellen
This gravestone in Portland stone is for a World War II airman who laid down his young life in 1945 for his country. It's good to see some flowers and poppies on his grave.

War grave in St. Helen's churchyard, Llanellen
This airman, a member of the RAF VR lost his life on May 28th 1945, hopefully in the knowledge that his sacrifice was not in vain and that his contribution had in some small part resulted in the Allied victory. VE Day was early in May that year with VJ Day coming in August. Leading Aircraftman LJ Fencott died just at the point when victory and peace was occurring - a poignant moment to lay down your life. I expect he was engaged in bringing about that final victory, most likely fighting the Japanese. Or possibly of wounds sustained in the European theatre of war before VE Day. His family might have hoped that now he would return home, like some others were. Their hopes were dashed. A cruel loss. We will remember them. Per Ardua Ad Astra.
