Ebbw Vale Steel Works
The first ironworks was established here in the late 18th century. Coal and iron ore were both mined locally. By the mid 19th century, Ebbw Vale was the largest steelworks in Europe.
In 1973, the works were operated by British Steel and the principal plant was a rolling mill. The blast furnaces were shut down in 1975.

Buffers at the end of the line, Ebbw Vale
Viewed from a footbridge. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2624568 The single track line extends for nearly 200 metres beyond Ebbw Vale Parkway railway station. Red buffers mark the physical end of the line. The black hole of a tunnel can be seen beyond the buffers. A small yellow distance marker in the foreground shows 18½ miles, the route distance from Cardiff Central station.
