Former Charlie Marks premises in Newport
For decades, the large shop on the left was the premises of C. Marks & Co. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2215542
The business sold electrical and electronic goods and components. The shop closed in the summer of 2013 after its owner Ian Marks decided to move his business online. He has been the owner of C Marks and Co, affectionately known in Newport as Charlie Marks (after his father) since 1972.
His father (real name Caple Marks) started the family business with Ada Marks as a tobacconist in the late 1940s. His father worked at the shop until his death in 1979.

Newport Women Remembered 1914-1918 mosaic
Located in St Paul's Walk near the corner of Commercial Street, the mural commemorates eight Newport women who died in the First World War. The names include Lilian Kate Jones, a Voluntary Aid Detachment nurse. She died in a cycling accident in Bristol in June 1916. She is buried in St Woolos Cemetery, Newport.
Another name on the wall is Gertrude Winifred Dyer, an administrator in the WAAC (Women's Army Auxiliary Corps). She joined the WAAC in August 1917. After serving in France she returned home when she became ill. She died of Bright’s (kidney) disease in Newport on January 27th 1918 aged 38. She is buried in Christchurch Cemetery, Newport.
