Located in St Paul's Walk near the corner of Commercial Street, the mural commemorates eight Newport women who died in the First World War. The names include Lilian Kate Jones, a Voluntary Aid Detachment nurse. She died in a cycling accident in Bristol in June 1916. She is buried in St Woolos Cemetery, Newport. Another name on the wall is Gertrude Winifred Dyer, an administrator in the WAAC (Women's Army Auxiliary Corps). She joined the WAAC in August 1917. After serving in France she returned home when she became ill. She died of Bright’s (kidney) disease in Newport on January 27th 1918 aged 38. She is buried in Christchurch Cemetery, Newport.
