Solar panels, Fairfax Close, Newport
These recently-built 21st century houses are fully equipped with solar panels which even today, a sunny day in January, are probably generating useful amounts of energy. Fairfax Close is between the northern end of Fairfax Road and the South Wales main railway line at East Usk Yard.

Somerton track maintenance, Newport
Looking in the direction of Newport Station along the London - South Wales main line from Somerton Road bridge. The yellow vehicle is used for track maintenance. A pair of small metal railway wheels are visible in front of the tyred wheels.

Entrance gates to DB Schenker site, East Usk Yard, Newport
The locked gates are at the northern end of Fairfax Road. They lead into East Usk Yard alongside the South Wales main railway line. A notice on a gate shows DB SCHENKER PRIVATE PROPERTY KEEP OUT TRESPASSERS WILL BE PROSECUTED. DB Schenker, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the German company Deutsche Bahn AG, is now the biggest freight operator in the UK after its purchase of EWS (English Welsh and Scottish Railway).

Sea Urchin ballast wagons, East Usk Yard, Newport
Viewed through these http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3292231 locked gates. The Sea Urchin ballast wagons are in sidings at East Usk Yard alongside the South Wales main line. Other types of British wagons also have sea creature names. Examples are sturgeon, whale, walrus and seahorse.

Fleetwood Close, Newport
Fleetwood Close connects with the far end of Lilburne Drive, between Ludlow Drive and the South Wales-London main railway line. The two parts of Fleetwood Close are at right angles to each other. This view is of houses on the west side of the close as it heads towards trees at the southern edge of the railway.
