Grade II listed Mathern Lodge, Mathern
Located in the old part of the village, on the eastern approach to the Church of St Tewdric. The 19th century single-storey lodge may have been built for Mathern Palace. Grade II listed in October 2000.

Flowers by a saint
Mathern (Merthyr Tewdrig) is a small but very well presented village, with many floral displays. Unsurprisingly, the historic church of St Tewdric is also brightened.

Wooden carving of St Tewdric the King, Mathern
Located near the perimeter wall of the Church of St Tewdric. Tewdric or Tewdrig ap Teithfallt was a 6th century king of the post-Roman kingdom of Glywysing, roughly modern-day Glamorganshire. He abdicated in favour of his son Meurig and retired to live as a hermit. He was recalled to lead his son's army against a Saxon force. He won the battle, but was mortally wounded. A wooden image of a Celtic saint
St Tewdric is said to have been wounded in battle against the Anglo-Saxons in the fifth century; he was returned home but died near this spot, which became his grave and subsequently the church. A wooden carving stands on the perimeter, bearing a resemblance. The Blue Cedar tree was growing in a cemetery in Chepstow before being worked on by local artist Neil Gow in 2011. It bears the text on the reverse 'Y Brenin a gafodd ei ferthyru' - the King who was martyred.

More history among the tombs
In the middle of St Tewdric's grounds are a number of gravestones and a fragment of a stone building. It is suspected to be the last remnants of a mediaeval priest's house.

A little door is all that remains
In the graveyard of St Tewdric is a small stump of a stone building. See CCC for another angle of the curious feature.
