St Tewdric is said to have been wounded in battle against the Anglo-Saxons in the fifth century; he was returned home but died near this spot, which became his grave and subsequently the church. A wooden carving stands on the perimeter, bearing a resemblance. The Blue Cedar tree was growing in a cemetery in Chepstow before being worked on by local artist Neil Gow in 2011. It bears the text on the reverse 'Y Brenin a gafodd ei ferthyru' - the King who was martyred.
