Chepstow buildings [21]
The George Hotel in Moor Street is adjoining the Town Gate. Built in 1899 to replace a former inn (dated 1610) that was destroyed, by fire, in 1896. Constructed in a 17th century style, in rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and decorative brick bands, all under a slate roof. Part of the Port Wall is incorporated into the building. Listed, grade II, with details at: https://cadwpublic-api.azurewebsites.net/reports/listedbuilding/FullReport?lang=&id=27109 Chepstow, the most easterly town in Wales, is located on the tidal River Wye, some 3 miles above its confluence with the River Severn. There is evidence of continuous human occupation from the Mesolithic period. The town grew in importance when the Normans erected a castle at what was the lowest bridging point of the River Wye. The town flourished as a port, being exempt from English taxation, and it mainly traded in timber and bark from the Wye Valley. The town became an important centre for tourism from the late eighteenth century.

George and the gate
Wedged very close up to the old gate - see Image] for a look at how close they are. There was a hotel on this site since about 1620, a Margaret Clayton is credited as opening it; it was later a coaching house. However a devastating fire destroyed it in 1896 which lead to its rebuilding three years afterwards.

The old gate
Chepstow built the walls around the town in the thirteenth century and hence there was little provision for motorised traffic. Beyond, the High Street descends within the protection.
