Wedged very close up to the old gate - see Image] for a look at how close they are. There was a hotel on this site since about 1620, a Margaret Clayton is credited as opening it; it was later a coaching house. However a devastating fire destroyed it in 1896 which lead to its rebuilding three years afterwards.
