Former Abertillery Central Snooker Club
Located on the corner of the town centre street named Foundry Bridge.
The building was erected in 1898 for the Powell Tillery Coal Company, probably as part of the Gray Colliery. In 1901, it was bought by a group of local businessmen, traders and workers. First registered as a billiard hall and private club, in 1902 it became The Abertillery Liberal and Labour Club. Throughout its existence it remained a private members, men-only, non-profit making club.
The club later changed its name to The Abertillery Central Snooker Club and Institute. Many players from the club went on to become top Welsh amateur champions. In 1956, the club, one of more than a thousand entrants that year, won a national team snooker competition sponsored by The News Chronicle. In later years, the club struggled financially. Dwindling membership and the lack of interest in snooker generally led to closure of the club in 2007.
