CQD SOS We have struck an iceberg
Gelligroes Mill, Pontllanfraith. This location in the Sirhowy Valley is where a Morse distress call from the RMS Titanic was picked up. It is believed that this was the only direct receipt on land of the distress call. It was received in the early hours of 15th April 1912 by 26 year old Arthur Moore, a radio enthusiast, who lived at the mill. When he informed the local police, he was not believed until the news was verified by press reports two days later. For more information on Arthur Moore see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artie_Moore . For another view of the mill see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2892390 .
