Brigstock: the market place
In the late middle ages Brigstock was the biggest settlement in Rockingham Forest and there were (from 1466) Saturday and (from 1604) Thursday Markets, and fairs on St George’s, St Bartholomew’s, St Mark’s and St Martin’s Days. These died out in the late 19th century. The market cross is ancient and carved with various initials and dates. The view is up Church Street, towards The Green Dragon Inn on the right. Brigstock: St Andrew - nave and tower arch
The earliest parts of the church date from the late 10th or early 11th centuries, and may incorporate material from an even more ancient church destroyed in the Danish invasions of the 9th century. The Romanesque arches of the north arcade (on the right) date from the late 12th century and there is much from the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries, including the broach spire.
