Beeston Boer War Memorial - inscription on front of pedestal, Broadgate Park, High Road, Beeston, Nottingham
The inscription reads:- "This Memorial was erected by public subscription to the honoured memory of Beeston soldiers who lost their lives during the Boer Campaign 1899-1902. In the cause of an United Empire." Beneath is a floral design and under that the year 1903. This was presumably the year the memorial was made, as it was not unveiled until February 1904.

Beeston Boer War Memorial - inscription on back of pedestal, Broadgate Park, High Road, Beeston, Nottingham
For several decades the inscription had deteriorated (the press were complaining as long ago as the 1920's) until it was almost completely illegible. At some point in the 2000's some major renovation seems to have been carried out to the monument and this included re-engraving the names of the five Beeston soldiers who died in the campaign of 1899-1902. The floral design below the names was left untouched, as was the year of 1903 below that, which continues on its way to total illegibility.
The restored text:- "Private William Taft killed at Roodeval. Private Arthur Villiers 2nd Grenadier Guards died at Pretoria of enteric. Lance-Corporal Frank Stapleton 4th Derbyshire Regiment killed at Rehenoster. Private George Hallam Williams 12th Company Imperial Yeomanry South Notts. Hussars died at Nauport of enteric. Private John William Cunnington 12th Company Imperial Yeomanry South Notts. Hussars killed at Lindley."

Until the recent (about 4 or 5 years ago) refurbishments which opened up the entrance to this open space to the High Road, the row of shops in the distance would not have been visible.
The removal of the old gates, while regrettable itself has made this pleasant spot far more accessible.
