For several decades the inscription had deteriorated (the press were complaining as long ago as the 1920's) until it was almost completely illegible. At some point in the 2000's some major renovation seems to have been carried out to the monument and this included re-engraving the names of the five Beeston soldiers who died in the campaign of 1899-1902. The floral design below the names was left untouched, as was the year of 1903 below that, which continues on its way to total illegibility. The restored text:- "Private William Taft killed at Roodeval. Private Arthur Villiers 2nd Grenadier Guards died at Pretoria of enteric. Lance-Corporal Frank Stapleton 4th Derbyshire Regiment killed at Rehenoster. Private George Hallam Williams 12th Company Imperial Yeomanry South Notts. Hussars died at Nauport of enteric. Private John William Cunnington 12th Company Imperial Yeomanry South Notts. Hussars killed at Lindley." See also:- Image
