Osborne Street and Wallan Street corner
Typical Victorian terraced houses in the area between Alfreton Road and Radford Boulevard. In years gone by many of the people who lived here would have worked at nearby hosiery works, Player's cigarettes (behind the camera) or Raleigh cycles in Lenton. In those days there were shops on the corner of Wallan Street.

Up Radford Boulevard
The picture was taken from a pedestrian refuge near the junction (behind the camera) with Alfreton Road and Gregory Boulevard on a sunny April morning. When I grew up in this area in the post-War years, The Cutting Room, on the corner of Wordsworth Road, was an old-fashioned barber's shop, full of cigarette smoke (after all, the Player's factories were just up the road), where I went for a short back and sides and was entranced by the black-and-white photographs in the copies of "Picture Post" provided for waiting customers.

Radford: the corner of Wordsworth Road
A Polish butcher's shop on the corner of Radford Boulevard and Wordsworth Road. The area is much more culturally diverse than it was when I grew up here in the fifties and sixties - though a number of my schoolmates were the children of Polish soldiers and airmen who had stayed in Britain after the war.
