The picture was taken from a pedestrian refuge near the junction (behind the camera) with Alfreton Road and Gregory Boulevard on a sunny April morning. When I grew up in this area in the post-War years, The Cutting Room, on the corner of Wordsworth Road, was an old-fashioned barber's shop, full of cigarette smoke (after all, the Player's factories were just up the road), where I went for a short back and sides and was entranced by the black-and-white photographs in the copies of "Picture Post" provided for waiting customers.
