Closed shops
The "top-end" of Alfreton Road where it meets Canning Circus has never been the most salubrious of areas but currently it is worse than it has ever been.

The main gate leading in and out of the General Cemetery to and from Alfreton Road (A610). The entrance and the ex-almshouses (Canning Terrace) are evidently undergoing redecoration.

A view of St Helen's Street with the "Sir John Borlase Warren" pub and other buildings. The pub is named after the fourth son of John Borlase Warren. This son was born in Stapleford, Notts and studied at Cambridge University before becoming the M.P. for Great Marlow. He was created a baronet and served as British Ambassador to St Petersburg. Having distinguished himself in the navy he was appointed Vice Admiral in 1805. He became a full Admiral in 1810 and was simultaneously appointed Commander-in-Chief for the North American station. He retired with honours in 1814 and died in 1822.

Canning Circus redevelopment
A row of derelict mid-19th-century shops at the top of Alfreton Road is being demolished. It will be replaced by what the developers call "a new take on Victorian town houses". The spire of All Saints' Church on Raleigh Street shows above the trees. For what was here before, see David Lally’s Image] and Image] (2010).

Tile detail on the Running Horse
The pub is now closed (see Image). One wonders what will happen to it and if its tiled exterior will survive.
