County Hall, West Bridgford
Not the most inspired piece of municipal architecture. Pevsner says: "Started in 1937 and then as now as dead as mutton."

North wing of County Hall
A grand little entrance portico on the north side of the County Council offices but the main entrance is facing the main road. The trees in the distance are on the opposite bank of the River Trent.

County Hall sculpture: agriculture
County Hall was begun in 1937 but not completed until after the War. Its main entrances on the Trent and Loughborough Road fronts are flanked by statues by the Nottingham sculptor Robert Kiddey (1900-84) which wouldn't have looked out of place in the Soviet Union. This one shows fruit-picking and harvesting, representing agriculture in the county.

After the fire at Nottinghamshire County Hall
Fire broke out on the first floor County Hall on the morning of 28 July 2022 and a dozen fire engines hurried to the large building by the River Trent. County Council staff were safely evacuated. Some crews were still there in the evening, when this picture was taken.

County Hall sculpture: art and architecture
County Hall was begun in 1937 but not completed until after the War. Its main entrances on the Trent and Loughborough Road fronts are flanked by statues by the Nottingham sculptor Robert Kiddey (1900-84) which wouldn't have looked out of place in the Soviet Union. This one represents art and architecture. I have no idea why the architect has no shirt.

Nottinghamshire County Hall: International Brigade Volunteers' Memorial
This bronze panel commemorates the eighteen Nottinghamshire men who fought against fascism in the Spanish Civil War. The nearby information board records their names, the battles in which they fought, and that "five rest in the soil of Spain". "They went because their open eyes could see no other way. No pasaran."

County Hall
Nottinghamshire County Hall, seen from the top of the Radcliffe Road Stand at Trent Bridge Cricket Ground. The western corner of the stand is in the bottom right-hand corner of the picture. County Hall was designed by E V Harris, started in 1937 and completed after the War. The original design included a tall tower which was never built. The rain clouds presaged an early finish to the first day of the Nottinghamshire-Surrey match (a rain-ruined draw).

Trent Bridge: towards County Hall
E V Harris inflicted similarly dull and gargantuan neo-Georgian municipal buildings on Bristol and Taunton. Nottinghamshire County Council's example was begun in 1937 but not completed until after the war.
