Archbishop's Palace ruins
The Palace was built in the 14th and 15th centuries as the residence of the Archbishops of York, it met its demise after the English Civil war when it was stripped of its lead and robbed for building materials.

Archbishop's Palace, Southwell, the Great Hall
Part of the 15th century rebuilding, later with a house built into it, finally restored in 1881, it is the only remaining roofed element of the medieval palace. Listed Grade I.

The State Chamber shown here was re-opened by the Archbishop of York on 7th October 2014, after restoration. It adjoins the Bishop's Manor and the ruins of the rest of the palace. Grade I Listed Building - see https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1211315 .

Archbishop's Palace
A resting point between York and London. In 1646 King Charles I entered last ditch negotiations with the Scottish Commissioners whose troops were besieging Royalist Newark. Later that day the king was taken prisoner by the Scots and was eventually handed over to Parliament, tried and executed.
