Dale Grove, Sneinton
Suburban development in the shadow of a working windmill. The presence of a working windmill so close to a City Centre must be unique in the UK.

The Cap - Green's Mill
The brake wheel is to the right, this is connected to the sails. The square support that all the machinery sits on can be seen along with the wheels that it moves on. Photography is difficult due to a wire mesh but you can see the workings.

Nottingham - NG3
A view down Belvoir Hill from the courtyard gates of Green's windmill, Sneinton. Through the gate on the left is the previous home of George Green (1793-184). Although George, the son of a miller and baker, followed his father's calling and worked in the adjacent mill he was also an almost entirely self-taught mathematical genius whose work was apparently admired by Albert Einstein.

Nottingham - NG3 (Old Sneinton)
It seems that George Green Snr. built the Mill House for himself and his family in 1817. In 1823 George Green Jnr. formed a relationship with Jane Smith, the daughter of William Smith, who Green Snr. had hired as his mill manager. Although Green Jnr. and Jane Smith never married, Jane eventually became known as Jane Green and the couple had seven children together. George Jnr. and Jane are buried in St. Stephen's Church graveyard, Old Sneinton.

Green's Windmill from Colwick Woods
From many viewpoints the windmill stands high, but from Colwick Woods one actually looks down on it. Beyond it is the tower of St Mary's Church.
