Former Methodist Chapel, Guildhall Street, Newark, Notts.
This Grade II-listed building on the west side of Guildhall Street was originally a Methodist Chapel - the second one to be constructed in Newark - was consecrated by John Wesley in 1787. He is said to have visited Newark on six occasions between 1743-88. At some point this building has also seen service as a school and business premises. It appears now to have been converted into apartments. Balderton Gate lies behind the photographer and Barnby Gate ahead.

Former Wesleyan chapel
The plaque above the door states that this was the second Methodist Chapel in Newark; it was opened in 1787 by John Wesley himself. It was replaced by the new Barnby Gate church http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3116492 in the mid 19th century, when it became a school. Now occupied by offices. Listed Grade II.

Sherwood Avenue, Newark on Trent, Notts.
This drill hall was constructed as the headquarters of the 8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters and opened by the Duke of Portland in June 1914. The battalion was mobilised at the drill hall in August 1914 before being deployed to the Western Front and was still based here at the start of the Second World War. The battalion amalgamated with 5th Derbyshire Battalion, to form 5th/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts. & Derbys. Regiment) in 1961. Between 1967-71, following M.O.D funding cut-backs, the use of the drill hall was much reduced. Finally, after the infantry presence in Newark was reduced to a single platoon in the early 1990s the drill hall was decommissioned, converted and enlarged for use as offices. It is currently occupied by RPS, the design and planning consultants.
