Plaque to swimmer Constance Jeans
The plaque recalls local swimmer Connie Jeans twice breaking the national swimming record for 220 yards at the opening of the Portland Baths, The Meadows, Nottingham. The historic baths (originally opened as a wash house in 1914) are still in use and part of the Portland Centre leisure facility. The pool is 33 yds long with cubicles alongside the poolside. Connie went on to represent Great Britain in the 1920 & 1924 Olympic Games winning silver medals in the 4x100m freestyle relays on both occasions but missing out finishing 4th in 3 individual events (100m & 300m 1920 & 100m 1924).

The Meadows: at the corner of Mundella Road
Three-storey red-brick terraces like this are common in all of Nottingham's Victorian suburbs - but not many terraces end in a sharp wedge like this one. Wilford Crescent East is to the left, Mundella Road straight ahead.

Renewing Arkwright Walk
Victorian Arkwright Street and many of the streets off it were demolished in the Meadows redevelopment of the 1970s. Now houses built then are being replaced along Arkwright Walk, which was once one of the main routes out of the city to the south and was replaced as a bus route by Meadows Way. The skylit roof of the Portland Centre shows above the stacked roof trusses.
