The plaque recalls local swimmer Connie Jeans twice breaking the national swimming record for 220 yards at the opening of the Portland Baths, The Meadows, Nottingham. The historic baths (originally opened as a wash house in 1914) are still in use and part of the Portland Centre leisure facility. The pool is 33 yds long with cubicles alongside the poolside. Connie went on to represent Great Britain in the 1920 & 1924 Olympic Games winning silver medals in the 4x100m freestyle relays on both occasions but missing out finishing 4th in 3 individual events (100m & 300m 1920 & 100m 1924).
