Ransom Wood Business Park, Rainworth, Notts.
The two blocks on the left were built as a Nurses' Home (Birch House) in 1921. They are now known as Oak House 1 and Oak House 2 and are offices belonging to various business enterprises. The house in the distance, now known as Ash House, was formerly The Sisters' Home. These 'more modern' buildings are situated alongside the former main drive of what was originally the Sherwood Forest Sanatorium (built 1902). In 1909 the institution was renamed Ransom Sanatorium following the death of its first Medical Superintendent from TB. From 1977-87 it served as a unit for individuals with learning difficulties and after these clients had been rehoused elsewhere it
became a base for NHS staff from the late 90s.

Ransom Wood Business Park, Rainworth, Notts.
This building, currently known as Ash House and originally part of the former Ransom Sanatorium (later Ransom Hospital), sits at the northern end of the long main drive that connects this part of the site with the entrance/exit on Southwell Road West (the A6191). It is now used as office units for various business enterprises but was formerly the Sisters' Home. Two circular plaques on the front elevation bearing representations of the double serpent entwined with surmounting wings and the staff of Hermes give a clue that the building was part of the original Ransom Hospital. The site, functioned as a TB hospital and later as a mental handicap unit between 1902-1976, although this building was constructed in the late 1930s/early 1940s. More recently, i.e. from 2000 onwards part of the site was used by NHS staff. (The double serpent and its association with Hermes, seems strange since Hermes was a messenger of the gods who had the responsibility of carrying souls into the underworld!)

This former Medical Superintendent's House, that was built in 1921, sits along side the main drive of this former hospital. It currently houses a non-residential nursery used mainly by employees working for one of the many enterprises on this business estate. The original institution - The Sherwood Forest Sanatorium for TB sufferers - opened in 1902, albeit not in these 'more modern' buildings. It was renamed The Ransom Sanatorium in 1909 in memory of its first Medical Superintendent. In the more recent past however, parts of the site were used as a unit for individuals with learning difficulties (1977-87) and for NHS staff (1992 onwards).

Ransom Wood, Mansfield, Notts.
A former hospital drive entrance can be seen beyond the barrier. From 1902 this site housed The Sherwood Forest Sanatorium (later changed to Ransom Sanatorium as a memorial to its first Physician Superintendent). After ceasing to function as a unit for clients with learning difficulties in 1976, it was renovated and became The Ransom Wood Business Park.
