Mansfield, Notts (Theatre)
The “Palace” on Leeming Street originally opened as “The Electric” in 1910, a cinema showing silent films. It was however, converted into a theatre in 1949. The District Council bought it for £11,500 in 1953 and have been responsible for it ever since. In 1963, most of the foyer and façade were rebuilt to give it a new look. Despite significant economic constraints during 2011, that forced the Council to increase its hire charges and to reduce its staffing establishment and availability for performances, it continues to be a very popular sub-regional entertainment venue. Next door to it is the municipal museum.

Leeming Street Vicinity, Mansfield, Notts.
This, the former home of the Mansfield Bowling Club is situated behind "The Bowl in Hand" pub in Leeming Street. The traffic in the background is on the A6009. In the 1990s a multi-storey car park was built (behind the photographer's left shoulder) overlooking this green and as a result of the loss of the peaceful position of their existing ground the club committee began looking for a new home. This site was sold to the Queen Elizabeth (School) Trust that provided the necessary funding for some new bowling club facilities on a piece of land adjoining the school that had been owned by the Trust. Their new premises, including a new pavilion and green, were opened in 2009. The bowling club was then relaunched, free from the impact of the multi-storey car park and nearby pubs and fast food outlets that had surrounded the club's historic green. The former site now appears unused.

The building in the foreground was built in 1901 as the Victoria Hall, later becoming a cinema. In 1929 it became a dance hall. In more recent times it has been a night club - with various names - finally closing in 2010 as the QI Club. Beyond that is the Widow Frost, a Wetherspoons pub.

The main theatre entrance is to the left of the picture, the mock-timbered building being a later incorporation into the theatre buildings. Formerly the School of Art, the building was constructed in 1905. It was designed by Vallance and Westwick for Charles Greenwood.

Part of the main entrance to the municipal museum is visible on the left-hand margin (Note the last letter of the word museum in signage form), whilst Handley's Arcade building occupies the right-hand side of the picture. Sandwiched in the middle of these two properties is the former Carnegie public library - in baroque revival style - that was opened in 1905. This building is now known as The Old Library and it houses a recording studio, meeting room and 100 seat studio theatre.
