Cossall: the Willoughby Almshouses
The almshouses were built in 1685 by George Willoughby, of the Wollaton family. Nikolaus Pevsner described them as "a delicious group, brick, the centre with a saddleback roof, and gabled posts on both sides".

The Old Church School Room, Cossall
The School Room dates from 1816. The diamond pane windows appear to have been designed to match those of the adjacent almshouses which are a couple of centuries older. it now serves as the village hall.

Cossall, Notts NG16
Pedestrians using this stretch of pavement in front of the 17th century Willoughby Almshouses on Church Lane are offered the protection of this very substantial and decorative brick wall. St Catherine's Church adds perhaps to this 'picture book village' image.

The walls of the Willoughby Almshouses, Cossall
The road frontage of the almshouses consists of this pair of parallel walls. They are almost like a set of medieval or prehistoric entrances to a fortification with the gateways in each wall offset. Quite why this arrangement should have been chosen is a mystery.
