Nottingham, NG1
Looking up Goose Gate, towards Carlton Street. Goose Gate, together with Hockley (the street name as opposed to the area), formed the ancient Walker Gate. Its name is said to have arisen from a surname, i.e. Robert-le-Gos, a goldsmith living in the locality in c.1300. He was a man of considerable importance in his generation and was elected Bailiff no fewer than eight times. Traffic descends down this one-way street and enters either Cranbrook Street or Hockley. Emmanuel House Day Centre and charity shop, developed in 1976 to help homeless and vulnerable people in the city, be seen on the right.

38 Goose Gate
The Pevsner city guide refers to "five shops by Marshall & Tweedy, 1938-39 with herringbone panels, the centre set forward with a giant order". This picture is of that centre section as the street is not wide enough to get the side sections in shot.

Emmanuel House Day Centre
At least that's what the sign says. I have no knowledge of the history of this building, but it looks to have been built in the 1930s.

Wall advertising, Hockley
The business to which it refers has long since disappeared. The corner, which used to be occupied by a Woolworths store, is now under redevelopment.

A cut above your everyday shop as this was built for Burton's in their distinctive inter-war Moderne house-style, architect Nathaniel Martin. It dates from 1929.
Occupied by Emmanuel House, an organisation supporting homeless people.
