Looking up Goose Gate, towards Carlton Street. Goose Gate, together with Hockley (the street name as opposed to the area), formed the ancient Walker Gate. Its name is said to have arisen from a surname, i.e. Robert-le-Gos, a goldsmith living in the locality in c.1300. He was a man of considerable importance in his generation and was elected Bailiff no fewer than eight times. Traffic descends down this one-way street and enters either Cranbrook Street or Hockley. Emmanuel House Day Centre and charity shop, developed in 1976 to help homeless and vulnerable people in the city, be seen on the right.
