Detail of former Shire Hall, High Pavement, Nottingham
James Gandon's noble centrepiece consisted of four Ionic columns, carved panels, niches and carvings of "an axe, cap and rods (Roman symbols of authority)". In 1876-78, Thomas Hine diluted the simple nobility by converting the niches into doors and windows. Full view: Image

Nottingham Shire Hall: portico
The inscription above the Ionic portico reads "This County Hall / was erected in the year MDCCLXX / and in the tenth year of the reign / of his majesty George the III". Inscribed on the architrave below the fasces are the words "J Gandon Arch" - but the building was much altered, with rather Frenchified extensions east and west, by the Nottingham architect T C Hine (1876-9). "The facade is now only just recognisable as Gandon's," says Pevsner. For an idea of it, click http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1822610 .
