James Gandon's noble centrepiece consisted of four Ionic columns, carved panels, niches and carvings of "an axe, cap and rods (Roman symbols of authority)". In 1876-78, Thomas Hine diluted the simple nobility by converting the niches into doors and windows. Full view: Image
