Ruddington: rusting railway relics
The boiler and bar frames are part of what the Great Central Railway (Nottingham) describes as a kit of parts - of an American Locomotive Co S160 Class 2-8-0 locomotive, No 70284, one of many shipped to the UK during the war to alleviate shortages. The tender on the left is much older - a Great Central Railway 4,000-gallon type dating from the early years of the twentieth century. This one was later adapted to carry limescale sludge from water-softening plants. The Nottingham Heritage Railway Centre is housed at the former Ruddington Ordnance and Supply Depot, built from 1940-2 and served by a branch from the Great Central main line. It operates steam and diesel services from Ruddington along the GC to Loughborough.

Ruddington: preserved railway north of Asher Lane
This section of railway is now part of the Great Central Railway (Nottingham), a heritage railway based at the Nottingham Railway Heritage Centre on the former Ruddington Ordnance and Supply Depot site. The depot was built from 1940-2 and after the war was used to store surplus military vehicles. Its regular auctions ceased in 1983 and most of the large site is now a country park. The junction with the former Great Central main line is ahead.

Disused signals
These were part of the installation when Ruddington Ordnance Depot was still in use. The current heritage railway operation uses a much less complicated signalling system. The crosses on the signals are the recognised method of indicating that they are not functioning.
